Austin's heritage is unique in that it has been the seat of government for both a nation and a state. In 1939 the settlement of Waterloo was chosen as the Capital of the Republic of Texas and the name was changed to Austin. When Texas became a state in 1845 Austin remained the Capital. It wasn't until an election in 1872 that the city was officially declared, once and for all, the Capital of Texas. Many changes have been made to the little wooded settlement along the Colorado River. Fortunately much of the past has been preserved and restored to the original style and finishes. There is always something live going on in this the Live Music Capital of the World! Whether it be music, theatre, or dance. From classical to grunge. Austin's got it -- and the food's great!
In late March to early April, Bluebonnets and other wild flowers blanket the roadsides and meadows throughout our friendly Lone Star State. |
